UK appoints six banks to lead first digitally native government bond

The United Kingdom has selected six major banks to lead the planned issuance of its first digitally native government bond, a pilot designed to test distributed ledger technology and onchain settlement in the sovereign debt market.

According to Cointelegraph, Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Morgan Stanley, NatWest and RBC Capital Markets will act as joint lead managers for the Digital Gilt Instrument, known as DIGIT. The appointments followed a competitive procurement process and were announced by Economic Secretary to the Treasury Lucy Rigby during a keynote at UK Digital Assets Week.

The pilot issuance is expected by the first quarter of 2027. The participating banks will be responsible for underwriting, engaging with investors and distributing the bond.

How the digital gilt will work

DIGIT will be issued through a platform operating inside the UK’s Digital Securities Sandbox. The sandbox provides a regulated setting for testing new approaches to digital securities infrastructure. The project will examine the use of distributed ledger technology across the bond’s issuance and lifecycle, including settlement recorded onchain.

A government bond, or gilt in the UK, is a debt security issued by the government to raise funds. A digitally native bond is created and managed using digital systems from the outset, rather than simply representing an existing paper or conventional security in digital form. The pilot is intended to assess how this technology could be used in sovereign debt markets and support the development of digital financial infrastructure in the UK.

Rigby said on X that appointing the banks was an important step toward issuing the digital gilt early next year and described DIGIT as a practical test of new financial market infrastructure.

The project follows HSBC’s appointment in February as the pilot’s distributed-ledger technology supplier. It also comes after a July agreement between HSBC and London Stock Exchange Group to develop a link for a digital securities depository.

Infrastructure remains a central challenge

The pilot will need to show how a digital bond can interact with the systems already used by financial institutions. Richard Baker, CEO and founder of Tokenovate and a member of HM Treasury’s Wholesale Digital Markets Industry Taskforce, said onchain settlement would need links to cash, custody and existing settlement infrastructure.

He also pointed to the importance of common standards and legal certainty so that events during a bond’s lifecycle remain consistent across different systems. In his view, establishing those connections from the start could help test whether tokenization improves liquidity and market efficiency without creating isolated digital platforms.

Marius Jurgilas, CEO of Axiology and a former central banker, said the effects could extend beyond government borrowing. He said linking issuance, distribution, trading and settlement through regulated infrastructure could expand the investor base and create more funding options.
