World launches biometric ‘proof of human’ badges for Zoom enterprise calls

World has made its biometric identity verification system available to Zoom enterprise customers worldwide, adding a visible “proof of human” badge intended to help meeting participants distinguish real people from AI-generated impersonations.

How the verification works

The feature, called World ID for Zoom, is available through the Zoom Marketplace. It uses several identity checks before a badge appears to other participants in a video meeting.

World compares three inputs: an image captured by its iris-scanning Orb, a live selfie and the participant’s video feed. The goal is to verify that a real and unique human is present on the call. The badge is then shown to other people attending the meeting.

World, a project backed by Sam Altman, first announced the Zoom integration in April, when the service was being tested in a limited beta with VanEck Funds. The company has now expanded access globally for Zoom’s enterprise customers.

Why deepfake protection is gaining attention

The rollout comes as businesses and financial firms face growing concerns about AI-generated video and audio being used to impersonate executives, employees or clients during sensitive conversations.

In 2024, an employee at engineering company Arup transferred about $25 million after scammers posed as company executives during a video conference. In February, suspected North Korea-linked hackers reportedly used fabricated video feeds in fake Zoom meetings to persuade crypto and fintech companies to install malware.

Against that backdrop, World says its system is designed for high-stakes conversations where participants need an additional way to confirm that the person appearing on screen is genuine. A verification badge does not itself describe the purpose of a meeting or guarantee that every statement made by a participant is accurate; it indicates the identity check described by World has been completed.

Financial-sector participation and market picture

World said Bain Capital, Pantera Capital and other financial firms were among the initial design partners for its broader identity-verification technology. The announcement did not disclose commercial terms for the Zoom feature.
